A6 Greeting Card with Standing Stone/Maiden Stone illustration. This is the story of a woman who challenged a man that he could not make a road to the top of Bennachie before she made her day’s worth of bannocks (unleavened traditional Scottish bread). He agreed to the challenge, but alas, the man turned out to be the devil in disguise, and made the road far quicker than she could make her bread. As he returned to steal her away, she wished that she would turn to stone before the devil caught her. Just as he grabbed her shoulder, she turned to stone. To this day, the Pictish carved stone, now named ‘Maiden Stone’ sits in Aberdeenshire - there is a chunk missing from the stone, which is said to be where the devil grabbed the woman on the shoulder just before she transformed. The Maiden Stone in actuality is a beautiful example of Pictish carving - this is just my interpretation of the folklore surrounding the stone, but the stone itself has carvings of creatures such as the Pictish beast and sea serpents, a human figure, a comb and brush, a Celtic spiral motif and knotwork pattern, amongst many other carvings. I’ve included the beautiful knot-work design on my piece, and hold my hands up to the minds of the Picts, being able to create such designs! Original hand drawn illustration digitally printed on to lovely 300gsm off-white Tintoretto Gesso paper, with a dappled finish. Comes with a brown Kraft envelope, with a compostable bag included for extra protection. Blank inside for your own message. Available as a single card or pack of three!
